must have baby items for twins

Having twins is amazing!! I am a twins mommy myself and it has been one crazy but incredible journey. Preparing for twins is very different than preparing for a singleton.

There are a few things that you must have to get you through the first year. Coming from personal experience and research, I put together a list of ten items that every twin mother should own.

1. Double Bassinet

Many parents choose to put their twins in a double bassinet instead of two cribs for the first few months. If you are hesitant about your babies sleeping alone in another room, the bassinet allows you to sleep right next to them.

It’s also easier to feed and change them during the night when they are so close. I personally used the Graco Pac N Play with Twins Bassinet for my babies and it worked so well for our family!

The twins slept together and were within arms reach when I needed to tend to them. I also used it as a basic pac n play when they got older.

The Graco Twins Pac N Play Bassinet Combo is roomy and give both of your babies plenty of space. It comes with a quilted mattress pad so your little ones are able to rest comfortably. Assembly is easy and it includes a carrying bag for traveling.

When you are ready to use it as a Pac N Play, all you need to do is detach the top half. Now you have yourself a play yard for your twins to play in. The Graco Twins Pac N Play is sturdy and durable. It is an excellent investment and will last you many years!

The quality is truly unbeatable and incomparable to other double Pac N Play Bassinets on the market. Out of all of the items I purchased for my twins, this has been my best investment.

2. Double Stroller Frame

A double stroller frame is essential! You will be using it whenever you take your babies out. Your frame holds both of your infant car seats and allows you to take them out without disturbing them. It can be a hassle to transfer your twins from a car seat to a stroller every time you need to run errands.

It is so much easier to just transfer them while they are in their car seats! There are two main double stroller frames on the market. They both have differences so I have included a comparison below.

See Now

The Double Snap N Go is a lightweight frame which is why so many people love it. It is designed for both car seats to be forward-facing. It includes a cup holder and small try for your items along with a storage basket underneath. It is easy to fold and compact enough to store in a smaller space.

If you plan on doing a lot of outdoor walking, I would recommend the Joovy frame which I will discuss next. The Double Snap N Go isn’t as sturdy as the Joovy and feels bumpy when going over terrain. However, if you are in the market for a lightweight double frame to run errands with then this is a great option.

See Now

The Joovy Double Stroller Frame is a little heavier than the Snap N Go and it is designed to hold your car seats side by side. Many parents find having their children right next to each other is just as convenient as forward-facing.

When they are side by side, you can easily tend to their needs without reaching over the handlebar. It is also easier to put the car seats into the frame when they are side by side. Despite the fact that the frame is on the heavier side, it does feel sturdier.

This frame handles well over terrain so your babies aren’t feeling every bump. In addition, you can adapt a larger range of car seats to your frame by using their special adapters.

Both of these frames are great and I actually owned them both. It’s so hard for me to pick a “favorite” but If I absolutely had to choose one, I would go with the Joovy. Having the babies side by side is very convenient and I love how sturdy it feels.

3. Double Breastfeeding Pillow

See Now

Whether you are nursing or bottle-feeding, every twins mama should have a Twin Z Pillow! If you plan to breastfeed your twins you will soon find that is frustrating propping them with pillows The Twin Z comfortably wraps around your midsection and cups both babies in the pillow on each side of you.

This pillow makes breastfeeding so much more stress-free with twins. The Twin Z is also a must for parents who bottle feed. You can use this pillow just as you would if you were breastfeeding. Nursing or not, you will still need your babies close to you to give them bottles without tiring your arms.

This pillow is also great to put your twins in while you are getting things done around the house. Your babies can relax together, snug and cozy while you accomplish what you need to do or even take a nap!

4. Two Bouncers

See Now

You will find that your precious babies will be spending a lot of time in their bouncers and you will, of course, need two! My twins were comfy in their bouncers while I cooked dinner, cleaned and more. There is quite a selection to choose from but my top pick for twin mamas is the Fisher-Price Sweet Dreams Snugapuppy Bouncer.

This bouncer is deep and has a soft cushioned seat. Your baby will melt right into it and relax comfortably. It also comes with a headrest and newborn insert. You will be using both of these a lot in the first three months. Most twins are born earlier, so the more support they have the better. Both of my twins were born at 34 weeks and came home at 36.

I used the headrest and insert daily, they loved it. The Snugapuppy bouncer has an adjustable three-point restraint to keep your baby safe and secure. It also comes with a detachable mobile so your baby is kept occupied.

You have the option of putting the seat on vibration mode if your baby finds it soothing. This bouncer also plays 20 minutes of soft music. The Snugapuppy is lightweight, making it easy to transport your baby around the house.

5. Diaper Bag

You have the option of buying a diaper backpack or tote diaper bag. Both options are excellent and it all comes down to preference. I have used both and I ended up buying one of each. Backpacks are super convenient if you don’t want something hanging on your shoulder. However, totes are also comfortable to wear criss-cross over your shoulder like a side bag.

It is designed to attach easily to your double stroller so you can leave it open for quick access to your essentials. This bag has a large capacity and can hold a lot! It has 16 pockets including a personal pocket for your items, two side bottle pockets, and a cell phone pocket.

The company uses their patented shuttle clips which allows the diaper bag to attach conveniently to your stroller’s handlebar. Along with the zipper, you can also take advantage of its magnetic closures for extra security. It also has D-rings to hold your baby’s toys.

6. two infant car seats

The Chicco KeyFit and the Graco SnugRide are definitely my top two infant car seat picks! They are similar and both are great choices. Read our full infant car seat guide here.

The Chicco KeyFit 30 infant car seat is one of the best car seats on the market and a very popular choice among parents. Every parent wants the safest and most comfortable car seat for their little one. Newer cars use the latch system for installation but if you choose to install your car seat with the seat belt, the seat has a built-in lock off. The built-in lock off avoids having to fumble with your seat belts locking system.

Whether you use the latch system or your seat belt, the process is hassle-free. 9. Double Rocker or Glider

A double rocker is the most important piece of nursery furniture you will have aside from your cribs. You will be rocking your babies a lot, especially during feeding. Holding two infants in a regular rocker is nearly impossible. It’s important to get a wide comfortable rocker designed for multiples.

The Baby Relax Double Rocker is one and a half times as wide as a regular rocker. You are sure to sit comfortably with your babies. Use your double nursing pillow while rocking them and make feeding stress free. This chair is contemporary and offers two color choices, beige or dark taupe.

10. Twins Carrier

There are a few different ways that you can wear your twins. By just using different techniques, you can essentially wear your twins just as you would a single baby.

See Now

The TwinsGo Carrier is your all-around carrier only for twins. This is a fully adjustable tandem carrier which means one baby is in front and one is in the back. Some parents prefer not to use the TwinsGo Carrier for babies under 6 months because you don’t have front access to both of them.

However, it can be used for infants from 10 to 45 lbs. It also converts to a single carrier so you and your spouse can wear your twins separately. The TwinsGo carrier comes in black and is made of breathable mesh.
